Team building: sailing with "llaguts"

Team rowing on a boat with centuries of history

Discover the Maritime Penedès by learning to sail a traditional rowboat requiring great team coordination. This activity can be complemented with other traditional games and sports on the beach as well as a seaside lunch on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Ideal for:

·Reinforcing team spirit in a sport-related activity
· Medium-sized groups (between 40 and 80 people)
· Any time of the year, although it's better to avoid public holidays and high season when the beaches tend to be full.

The Activity

A llagut is a traditional wooden boat used for fishing and coastal trade, the main sources of income for the villages and towns along the coast of Catalonia, the Balearics and the Gulf of Lion. Since the end of the 1980s these traditional boats have increasingly been restored and regattas are now held with teams simulating the contests between fishermen in the 19th century who used to race to reach port first and thereby get the best price for their catch at the local fish auction.
The activity starts on the beach with an introduction on how to row a llagut. The group is then divided into teams of between 8 and 11 people, with one of our helmsmen for each team's boat. We sail for a maximum of one hour and the activity ends with a small regatta.
For groups of more than 20 people the sailing is combined with rowing on land (with rowing machines) and other traditional sports, such as tug-o-war.

This activity can also be complemented with a seaside lunch at the local llotja or market.

The venue

This activity is normally carried out at the beaches of Vilanova i la Geltrú. With a surcharge it can also be carried out at Sitges and other towns on the Penedès coast.
